Inspiration drawn from the world around me…

India Sketches

India Sketches

Inspiration is drawn from my devotion to the natural world.  The landscape takes my breath away and I aspire to convey this.  The source of my larger works are small sketches drawn from the immediacy of my surroundings whilst outdoors.   Automatic drawing helps me employ all the senses and document my feelings as well as a visual response.  Back in the studio my work takes on a life of its own.  Using a mixture of media, sometimes with elements of collage.

Many landscapes inspire me—some local, some further afield.  I am continually influenced by visits to the Yorkshire coastline and forests, as well as mountain hiking around the world.

I am also a teacher of art at a high school, teaching students from 11 - 18 years old within the fields of Fine Art and Photography. I devote time to my own art practice weekly, and spend much of my school holidays either working in the great outdoors; gathering visual information for my paintings or in my art studio at home.
